“Safe Cultivation of Vegetables” from 17.10.2023 to 23.10.2023 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mansa to promote crop diversity and encourage youth towards allied occupations under the guidelines of Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Deputy Director (Training). A five-day vocational training program was successfully organized above. 17 students from different villages of Mansa district participated in this training program. During the training program, Dr. B.S. Sekhon, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) informed about the importance and future of low tunnel method, poly house and net house production of vegetable plants and year round cultivation of vegetables. Apart from this he also discussed site selection in safe farming, Standard seed, seed modification, Funbusp; Bed preparation, seeding rate, germination percentage, number of plants per acre, use of pro-tray and soilless media in vegetable nursery growing and pest and disease management are explained in theoretical and practical detail. During the training course, Dr. Sekhon, while giving technical information to the farmers about cultivation of capsicum and melon with low tunnel method, said that with this method, one can earn more profit by taking early harvest.

Practical information about irrigation with poly house and drip method. A knowledge-enhancing trip was also conducted for the students at the Regional Research Center Bathinda. Dr. Karamjit Singh Sekhon, Director, Regional Research Center Bathinda, in the presence of the trainees, shared his thoughts about the ongoing research on bad waters and the objectives of the center. Dr. Anurag Malik (Scientist, Regional Research Center Bathinda) taught the trainees about irrigation management in gardens and vegetables using drip method, cleaning of filters and pipes used in drip method; He gave detailed information about cleaning, mixing bad water and canal water for better production. Gave theoretical and practical information about poly house structure, vegetables grown in poly house (tomato, cucumber etc.) and paneer. The learners were also given a visit to the nursery farm of progressive farmer Manjit Singh for practical training on growing paneer in the tunnel method. The farmers took keen interest during the training program and the experts answered their queries satisfactorily.
