As a part of World Environment Day (LiFE for Environment) celebrations, ICAR-IIOR organized Awareness Programme Crop residue Management for land restoration and enhancing organic carbon in Tirumalapur Village, in Shabad Mandal, RangaReddy district to Sugunamala Farmers Producers Organization on 30/05/2024.
During the awareness campaign the scientists of IIOR highlighted huge amount of crop residue (500 Mt/year) generated every year crop wise, ill-effects crop residue burning, effective conversion of crop waste for utilization as fodder, preparation of nutrient rich compost, thatching material, energy generation, bio-ethanol preparation efforts of central govt in creation of crop residue policy to stop crop residue burning etc were discussed. Further, the effective ways of enhancing organic carbon in soils through crop rotation with green manure crops, in-situ and ex-situ management of crop residue by using shredders and spray of bio-decomposers for rapid decomposition of crop residues and conversion to nutrient rich compost and were discussed.
A practical was arranged on preparation of bio-decomposer liquid through adopting prescribed methodology and its use on faster decomposition resulting in compost rich in nutrients was demonstrated. About 40 farmers were benefitted and the events were covered in the local newspapers.
