A three-days residential training programme, sponsored by the Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) was organized jointly by the ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture (CIWA), Bhubaneswar and the Centre for Climate Change, BIRD, Lucknow during 27-29 November 2024. The main theme of the training was ‘Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Gender Mainstreaming in Development Projects’. The aim of the programme was to familiarize participants with various R&D-oriented initiatives for women’s empowerment undertaken by ICAR-CIWA and to equip them with the skills to assess and analyze the impact of developmental projects which are both environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. About 33 participants from different states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Odisha participated in this training. This training emphasized the integration of gender issues while conceptualizing or in developing new projects. Technical sessions were based on tools and methods in ESIA, overview of environmental and social safeguard framework & performance standards which were coordinated by Dr Snehal M Bansod and Dr Rajni Pandey, Programme Directors, BIRD, Lucknow through participatory approach by group discussion, presentations etc. A Session on ‘Increasing role of Women in Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities’ was delivered by Dr Mridula Devi, Hon’ble Director, ICAR-CIWA, Bhubaneswar. During the programme, visits were organised to the laboratories and farms of ICAR-CIWA, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Puri and adopted village of ICAR-CIWA for gaining the practical insight and awareness about different women friendly technologies and farming system models. During the valedictory ceremony, the Chief General Manager NABARD Dr S.K. Mishra was the Chief Guest and AGM Dr Samir R Samantra, Gust of Honour graced the occasion and distributed the Certificates to the participants in the presence of Dr Mridula Devi, Director, ICAR-CIWA, Bhubaneswar.
