ICAR-CIFRI released IMC fishes in the river Ganga and Yamuna in a series of Ranching programme ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj organized a series of Ranching cum mass awareness programme under National Ranching Programme 3.0 in the river Ganga and Yamuna. Depleted fish species of the Ganga river system were released into the Yamuna river at Prayagraj on 7th May 2024 and into the Ganga river at Kadadham, Sirsa and Mirzapur respectively on 9th, 11th and 15th May 2024. About 10,000 (Ten Thousand) advance size fingerlings of Indian Major Carp viz. Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal fishes were ranched into the Yamuna river while ten thousand, fifteen thousand and twenty-five thousand were ranched into the Ganga river at Kadadham, Sirsa and Mirzapur respectively for its restoration and conservation purpose.
These events were organized under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) project under guidance of Dr B. K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. The chief guest of the occasion at Prayagraj, Prof. S. K. Duggal, Ex-Director, MNNIT, Prayagraj addressed the function and explained the importance of river & biodiversity for human civilization and called for keeping it clean. Special guest on the occasion Lt. Colonel Sunil Guhani of Ganga Task Force addressed the people and urged to save the rivers of the country. More than 100 people participated the programme. At Kadadham Shri Rajesh Sharma, Convener Ganga Vichar Manch, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India was the chief guest and he informed the audience about the work done by the ministry and administered pledge to about 50 people for keeping Ganga river clean.
Ranching at Sirsa was organized with the help student of Shriram Pratap Inter College, Sirsa where Shri Shiv Prakash Pathak, the Principal of the college was Chief guest on the occasion. He urged the student to keep the Ganga clean and also persuaded for other people. Ranching was carried in the presence of more than 250 students of the school. Sri Navin Mishra, Fisheries Development Officer was the chief guest at Mirzapur and ranching was carried out in his presence. More than 50 people were addressed by him for saving fish diversity of the river.
The whole programme was coordinated by Dr Dharm Nath Jha, Incharge of the centre and he explained the motives of Ranching to the common people. Packaging and transportation of fish seed were monitored by Dr V. R. Thankur. Gathered audience were sensitized about fish and fishery of the river by Dr A. Alam, Dr. Vikas Kumar and Mr Jeetendra Kumar. Scholars of NMCG project viz. Dr Rayees Bhat, Dr Sandeep Kr Mishra, Dr Pargi, Miss Arpita, Shri Ashish Kumar and Shri Rambhajan actively participated and helped in the execution of the programme. Representatives of Ganga Vichar Manch, Ganga Task Force, Fishery Dept. of U.P.and pilgrims, students, fishermen from nearby villages, fish traders, and local people living on the banks of Yamuna and Ganga were present in the programme.
