30th December, 2024
A week-long training program on “Inland Fisheries Management” was successfully conducted by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, from December 17 to 23, 2024. The objective of the program was to improve the knowledge and disseminate modern technologies to fish farmers in Bhagalpur District, Bihar. As an inland state, Bihar recognizes the importance of inland fisheries and freshwater aquaculture as key drivers of economic growth, with the state government actively supporting the sustainable management of its aquatic resources.
The training program involved the participation of 30 fish farmers, along with a Fisheries Development Officer. It focused on strategies for enhancing fish yields sustainably from inland waters. A Hindi-language book, ‘Bihar Rajya Mein Antarsthaliya Matsiki Prabandhan,’ specifically developed for farmers in Bihar, was distributed to participants during the program. Dr. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, inaugurated the event, welcoming the participants and motivating them to improve their skills in inland fisheries management, which would contribute to employment creation and improved livelihoods.
Throughout the week, the training covered various critical aspects of fish farming, including the construction and preparation of ponds, water quality management, induced breeding methods, composite fish culture, management of nursery and rearing ponds, fish disease control, feed formulation, enclosure culture, and techniques for ornamental fish farming. Practical sessions on soil and water quality analysis, as well as fish feed preparation, were also included, providing participants with essential skills for successful fish farming. The program also included field visits to ornamental fish markets (Galiff Street, Kolkata) and culture systems in the East Kolkata Wetlands, aquaculture fields of ICAR-CIFA in Kalyani, and private hatcheries in North 24 Parganas. These visits allowed participants to witness best practices and advanced techniques firsthand. At the conclusion of the training, participants expressed their satisfaction, noting that the knowledge and skills they gained would help them improve fish production in their ponds.
The training was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy and Ms. Thangjam Nirupada Chanu. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the capacity building of farmers and promote sustainable fisheries development in Bhagalpur District, Bihar.
