The National Security Guard (@nsgblackcats), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, collaborated with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, and Howrah Krishi Vigyan Kendra for the successful organisation of ‘Millet Mela’ at the NSG RH, Kolkata campus today. The Mela was organised to create awareness about the health and nutritional benefits of millets among serving personnel, including family members of NSG.

The Millet Mela was inaugurated by Colonel Anil Kumar, Group Commander, 29 Special Composite Group, NSG. He commended the collaborative efforts of ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, and Howrah KVK, highlighting their seamless coordination in bringing this impactful event to fruition, which celebrated the importance of millets in promoting a healthier future.

Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, emphasized the collaborative spirit that united science, security, and sustainability. Inspired by the NSG’s motto, “Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha,” he highlighted the parallel between their dedication to protection and the essential role of millets in ensuring nutritional security for commandos and their families. Dr Dey accentuated the significance of millets as a climate-resilient crop with a low water footprint, rich in antioxidants and micronutrients, referring to them as nature’s gift for safeguarding health and fostering a sustainable future.

Howrah KVK showcased millet’s nutritional value and production technologies through informative posters at their stall. Family members of NSG participated in a best-dish contest, presenting millet-based dishes, with awards given based on innovation and sensory evaluation (taste, aroma, appearance, and texture).

Howrah KVK also prepared and served Khichdi (barnyard millet) and Kheer (foxtail millet), which were well received. NSG personnel contributed dishes like sorghum Khichdi, millet tikka, and jowar ka halwa, which were distributed to attendees.

The event was coordinated by Major Zaheer Iqbal, NSG RH, Kolkata, and Dr Kironmay Barui, Head, Howrah KVK.

Approximately 200 people attended the Mela.
