The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to collaborate on the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources in India. The MoU focuses on sharing expertise and resources, developing joint project proposals, and raising awareness about groundwater recharge and efficient usage.
Key areas of collaboration include data collection and analysis, water management strategies, real-time data processing, groundwater recharge, policy development, water governance, and stakeholder training. ICAR institutes and CGWB stations will work together on processing real-time DWLR (Digital Water Level Recorder) data, assessing groundwater usage for irrigation, improving groundwater use efficiency, and studying the effects of groundwater regime changes on agriculture. Other focus areas include groundwater contamination from pesticides and fertilizers, crop diversification, and on-farm water management for groundwater sustainability.
The MoU aims to foster sustainable groundwater utilization, minimize the impacts of climate change on groundwater resources, and promote advanced agricultural practices to enhance groundwater sustainability.
