There is immense potential for increasing employment opportunities in the field of fisheries – Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh

A high level meeting was held today between Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Minister of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy and Panchayati Raj, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi for the development of fisheries sector in the country.
In the meeting, Shri Chouhan said that better research is being done by ICAR in the field of fisheries. How to provide immediate and maximum benefits to farmers across the country from new technologies and many initiatives developed by the institute was discussed in this meeting and guidelines were also given to the concerned officials. The Union Minister said that the fisheries sector has developed a lot under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi over the last several years, and is still an employment generating sector with immense possibilities of development. To explore and implement all the possibilities in this sector, it has been decided that all the concerned departments should work together so that farmers, fish farmers, animal husbandry, etc. get maximum benefit.
Shri Chauhan said that the government wants that small farmers should get maximum benefit, for this there is a need to develop model farms so that farmers can also increase their income through related works. He said that the government is working through many schemes and programs. In today’s meeting, it has been decided to form a high-level committee in the field of fisheries, which will include senior officials of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy and ICAR. The committee will hold regular meetings and will also prepare a roadmap for the future. The Union Minister said that the help of the states will be taken in this committee and awareness programs and camps will be organized to spread the words of successful farmers as much as possible.
Shri Singh said that ICAR has done very good research in fisheries which is very useful, which is planned to be taken to farmers, villages, new startups through this meeting, so that further improvements can be made. He told that there has been an unprecedented increase in fish production through Blue Revolution, as a result of which India is today at the second place in the world in fish production and is also exporting fish worth Rs 60 thousand crore annually. Shri Singh told that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Modi, the farmers of the country are getting the benefit of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana on a large scale. He told that India is number one in the world in milk production, the Center is working in a planned manner to increase exports in this sector and to make the country FMD free.
Secretary of Fisheries Department, Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi and Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), Dr. Himanshu Pathak were also present in the meeting.
In the meeting, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science) of ICAR, Dr. J.K. Jena presented the important research areas and technology development of 8 fisheries research institutes.
