Basal Fertilizer Management for Blackgram: Importance of Gypsum Application

Blackgram, also known as urad bean or black lentil, is a popular crop grown in different parts of India. It is a rich source of protein, fiber, and minerals, making it an essential ingredient in the diet of millions of people in the country. However, like any other crop, blackgram requires proper care and management to grow well and produce a healthy yield. One crucial aspect of blackgram farming is the application of basal fertilizers, including gypsum, which significantly impacts the crop’s growth and development.

Basal fertilizers are those nutrients that are applied at the time of sowing or transplanting. The primary objective of applying basal fertilizers is to provide the initial nutrient requirement of the crop and ensure its healthy establishment. In the case of blackgram, it is essential to apply basal fertilizers in the right amount and proportion to enhance root development, increase plant growth, and improve yield.

One of the basal fertilizers that play a critical role in blackgram farming is gypsum. Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral that contains calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4·2H2O), a crucial nutrient for the crop’s growth. It is commonly used as a soil amendment to improve soil fertility, reduce soil erosion, and increase water penetration. Gypsum application in blackgram farming has several benefits, some of which are:

Improves Soil Structure: Gypsum helps to loosen compacted soils and improve soil structure, allowing roots to penetrate the soil easily. This helps to increase root development, water, and nutrient uptake.

Enhances Nutrient Availability: Gypsum application increases soil pH and enhances the availability of essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This helps to promote plant growth and increase yield.

Reduces Salinity: Gypsum has a natural ability to reduce soil salinity by replacing sodium ions with calcium ions. This helps to reduce the harmful effects of salinity on the blackgram crop.

To apply gypsum as a basal fertilizer in blackgram farming, it is recommended to mix it with other fertilizers like DAP or NPK in the ratio of 1:1. The ideal quantity of gypsum to be applied depends on the soil type and its chemical properties. Generally, farmers can apply 500-1000 kg of gypsum per hectare to achieve maximum benefits.

In conclusion, basal fertilizer management is crucial for blackgram farming, and gypsum is an essential nutrient for the crop’s growth and development. Gypsum application in blackgram farming improves soil structure, enhances nutrient availability, and reduces soil salinity. Therefore, farmers must follow proper guidelines to apply gypsum as a basal fertilizer in their fields to achieve a healthy crop and maximum yield.
