Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI visited Directorate of Fisheries, Guwahati, Assam on 4th may, 2024. He was accompanied by Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Principal Scientist, Dr. A.K. Das, Principal Scientist and Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist of the Institute. Mr. Gauri Shankar Das, Director of Fisheries, Government of Assam welcomed Director, CIFRI and thanked him for his visit.

A meeting was organized between officials of Department of Fisheries, Assam and ICAR-CIFRI personnel with the objective of deciding the plan of action and technical aspects of Asian Development Bank (ADB) sponsored Sustainable Wetland and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT) Project to be implemented by Department of Fisheries, Assam. The meeting started with felicitation of Director, CIFRI following which Dr. R.C. Barman, Project Director, SWIFT Project, Government of Assam gave a detailed presentation on the objectives and activities earmarked under the project. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI stated that sustainability of the project to be taken into account and the communities involved need to be empowered so that they will be able to continue the activity once the project is completed. He also stated that in addition to fish production, other non-tangible benefits like ground water recharge, water use for human activities and all other ecosystem benefits for the targeted beels should be accounted for while showcasing the outputs under the project.

This will help in showing the far-reaching impact of the project. Director, CIFRI provided his valuable inputs for smooth functioning and better output and visibility of the proposed project activities, which was well-received by the Department of Fisheries, Assam.
