The small and marginal fish farmers of the hilly region have their own tiny cemented tank. Due to lack of proper knowledge and technical support on fish farming, they can’t do commercial fish production. To improve their livelihoods by providing technical support for enhancing the fish production from these small unit, a awareness program along with input distribution was organized by ICAR-CIFRI under SCSP programme at Sittong on 9th June, 2024. With the vision of upscaling socio-economic condition of rural hill community, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) is promoting the Amur Carp fish farming for strengthening their livelihood under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. In this programme ICAR-CIFRI distributed 50000 Amur Carp seeds to 50 beneficiaries among them 10 females from Sittong and Mongpu of Darjeeling district in collaboration with Sittong Multi Agro Cooperative (REH).
The Sittong Gram Panchayat Pradhan Mr. Sushil Sukhna and Ex. Pradhan Mr. Digger Lepcha also graced the occasion and share their thoughts about the fisheries as alternative livelihood opportunity in the region. Dr. Das has interacted with the farmers and encouraged them about scientific fish farming with the scientists of ICAR-CIFRI. He also provided scientific advice to the queries of a few trainees. Dr. Das, has advised the people to continue this fish farming on a mission mode approach on a cluster basis and assure CIFRI’s support for them.
