Every month, ICAR-CIFRI conducts a number of programmes to build the capacity of the stakeholders. July 2024 was an eventful month. Sixty-two farmers, and ten officials were trained at ICAR-CIFRI. An orientation programme was also organized for a group of 42 officials from Odisha.
A seven days Training cum Capacity Building Programme on “Inland fisheries management” for the fish farmers of Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, was organized from 2 to 8 July 2024, intending to strengthen their knowledge and skills on different aspects of inland fisheries management for sustainable fish production and livelihood. During interaction with the farmers, Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, urged the farmers to enhance their knowledge about inland fisheries management, particularly in the open water fisheries resources in the eastern region of India.
National Fish Farmer’s Day is celebrated on 10 July every year to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of fish farmers, aquaculture industry professionals, and other stakeholders to ensuring a sustainable and thriving fisheries sector. On the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day, farmers from various states were interacted with. A total of 114 farmers participated in the training programme. Another seven-day training programme was organized from 10 July to 16 July,23 for the farmers of Bhagalpur District Bihar. In view of the vast inland fisheries resources in Bihar, the fish farmers of Bhagalpur were imparted with knowledge on pond construction and management, water quality management, composite fish culture, fish feed management, transportation of live fish, ornamental fish farming, fish disease management, enclosure culture for livelihood improvement, zero budget natural fish farming, economic evaluation of fisheries enterprise and socio-economics and governance related issues in fisheries management. The trainees were also provided with practical demonstrations of water quality management and CIFRI products and technology, along with visits to the Feed Laboratory of CIFRI and the Aquarium and Ornamental Unit. They also had exposure visits to Kalna fish farm, Halisahar fish farm, the Galiph Street ornamental fish market in Kolkata, East Kolkata Wetland and ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre.
An exposure visit was also conducted for 42 officials of DoF, Odisha, on 18 th July 2024. The Department of Chhattisgarh sponsored training on “Inland Fisheries Management” for the 10 Chhattisgarh officials from 25 to 27 July 24. The three-day Training Programme concluded with certificate distribution and a feedback session from the trainees. All the officials expressed a high level of satisfaction, as the short-term training significantly improved their knowledge and skills.
In fact, capacity building is a process that enables the stakeholders to develop and strengthen skills and abilities and helps them to achieve their desired goal.
