ICAR-Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute organised a brainstorming session on strategies to enhance feed quality and Implement sustainable solutions to address the nutritional challenges and boost small ruminant productivity in a changing climate today. The session aimed to evaluate the constraints of small ruminant nutrition and plan strategies through research to address these concerns, resulting in sustainable small ruminant production in the country.
The Chief Guest, Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General, Animal Sciences, ICAR, emphasized developing a region-specific sustainable package of practices for different feeding systems using locally available feed resources for small ruminants. Recommendations included minimizing feed fodder wastage through advanced feed technologies, pasture development and restoration based on a preferential index, and formulating a feeding module for Avishaan and nano supplements for migratory flocks.
Prof. (Dr) Vishnu Sharma, Former Vice-Chancellor, Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner, and Dr R. K. Sawal, Director, NRC on Camel, Bikaner, were present during the programme.
During the session, guests released a bulletin, folder, and souvenir. Four presentations were made, with two from scientists at ICAR-CSWRI, Avikanagar, and two from ICAR-NIANP, Bengaluru. Following the presentations, esteemed panelists shared their insights on research activities to be pursued by the Animal Nutrition Division of ICAR-CSWRI, addressing the issues highlighted during the presentations for both short- and long-term programs.
A total of 35 participants from ICAR-CSWRI, ICAR-NIANP, ICAR-NRC on Camel, and from RAJUVAS, Jaipur, attended the brainstorming session.
