ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Malda, under the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture in collaboration with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, organised an awareness camp in Chandandighi village in Gazole block to celebrate Ganga Utsav 2024, focusing on the conservation and cultural significance of the rivers in hybrid mode today. Organized in the basin of the Mahananda River, which is part of the Namami Gange project, the event united the village community to emphasize the importance of preserving river health and cleanliness.

Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, highlighted the critical need to preserve the Ganges and its tributaries, which are vital to our agricultural heritage. He skillfully discussed the five pillars of the Namami Gange initiative—Nirmal Ganga, Aviral Ganga, Arth Ganga, Gyan Ganga, and Jan Ganga. Dr Dey urged for a stronger emphasis on the fifth pillar, Jan Ganga, viewing it as the core of a dynamic Jan Abhiyan—a collective movement that encourages everyone to become protectors of our rivers, custodians of our heritage, and champions of a lasting legacy.

The event brought together 36 enthusiastic participants. In a symbolic and heartfelt gesture, the community collectively took a pledge to uphold the cleanliness and health of the Ganga and other rivers, reflecting a commitment to the environment and future generations. The event fostered a renewed sense of responsibility and unity, making the occasion a meaningful step toward sustainable conservation efforts.

The programme included interactive sessions highlighting the goals of Namami Gange and the critical role of community participation in river rejuvenation efforts.

Officials from ICAR-KVK-Malda participated in the programme.
