As a part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) under the All India Network Project on Antimicrobial Resistance (AINP-AMR), an awareness programme was arranged for the shrimp farmers of Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, at Ponneri today.

The farmers were made aware of the consequences of AMR as a silent pandemic. The farmers were urged not to use antibiotics and to adopt alternate strategies to combat shrimp diseases. They were also informed to fully utilize the facilities under the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) under the PMMSY programme regularly and know the extent of infection in their farm to minimize the use of antimicrobials in ponds. The current disease situation in shrimp farms in India, particularly the infection caused by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei, was discussed with the farmers.

A presentation was also made on good soil and water quality management to reduce stress and avoid disease. The experts made presentations on different aspects of shrimp farming and interacted with the farmers.

About 68 shrimp farmers from different parts of the district attended this programme.
