ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore observed Vigilance Awareness Week during 28th October- 3rd November, 2024 Vigilance awareness week was observed during the 28th October- 3rd November, 2024 at ICAR-CIFRI with theme “Culture of Integrity for Nation’s Prosperity”. The week-long observance began on 28th October, 2024 with Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI administering a pledge to the officials and staff, while many others participated by taking an e-pledge. Around the campus, numerous posters, banners, and placards highlighted the harmful impacts of corruption and CIFRI’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach. The following day, all staff members formed a human chain to demonstrate their unity in fighting corruption. This was followed by a walkathon to the local ferry ghat, a busy commuting spot, aimed at raising public awareness and encouraging people to speak out against corruption. The event attracted considerable interest from locals and commuters. On 30th October, 2024, a drawing competition on the theme of vigilance was held for the institute’s staff. This was followed on by an extempore speech competition, which included participation from staff, students, young professionals, and others.

On November 1st, an essay competition was organized at ICAR-CIFRI as well as at schools for senior students of Douglas Memorial Higher Secondary School, Central Model School, and PM Shree Kendriya vidyalaya of Barrackpore. On November 1st, a quiz program was conducted for the staff. A slogan competition was also organized where all the staff participated and submitted slogans in Hindi or English based on theme mentioned above. The week-long observance concluded with a Valedictory ceremony on 4th November, 2024, where Sh. Chandershekhar Meena, IRS, Deputy Director Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Sub National Unit (East) GST Bhavan, Kolkata, served as the Chief Guest. He expressed the importance of observing Vigilance awareness week and said that “Doing the right thing even when no one is watching”. He appreciated the work carried out by CIFRI and stressed the importance of vigilance while dealing with nature during research activities.


Dr. D.K. Meena (Vigilance Officer, ICAR-CIFRI), delivered welcome address followed by felicitation of the Chief Guest and Dignitaries. Shri Nirmal Sarkar, Chief Administrative Officer, appreciated the activities under Vigilance awareness week, 2024. Dr. Armaan U. Muzadaddi, Chairman of steering committee and Head of Division (Open Water Aquaculture Production and Management Division) briefed about the events like Walkathon, Human chain formation, Drawing competition, extempore speech competition, slogan competition, quiz competition and essay competition. Dr. S.K. Manna, Head of the Division, Riverine and Estuarine Fisheries Division highlighted the importance of transparency, ethical standards, and independent oversight in scientific research to ensure integrity and public trust. The cash prize and along with certificates were distributed to the winners by the Chief Guest Sh. Chander Shekhar Meena. The Director-in-charge, Dr. Srikanta Samanta expressed the fair management of financial audit at ICAR-CIFRI.

He congratulated the winners of the different events organized. All the CIFRI staffs, students of Douglas Memorial Higher Secondary School and Central Model School, Kendriya vidyalaya of Barrackpore and fish farmers of Odisha were enthusiastically participated in the programme. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. M. Shaya Devi, Scientist.
