As part of its ongoing crop residue management initiatives, Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Gurdaspur, organized a block-level awareness camp at Village Masatkot, Block Kalanaur, on November 7, 2024. The camp aimed to equip farmers with sustainable paddy residue management practices and discourage the harmful practice of crop residue burning.

Dr. Satwinderjit Kaur, Associate Professor (Soil Science) at KVK Gurdaspur, welcomed the farmers and discussed the environmental hazards of burning crop residues. She introduced both in-situ and ex-situ residue management techniques, encouraging farmers to adopt methods that best suit their field conditions. Dr Kaur highlighted how incorporating residue into the soil improves soil health and shared tips for efficient fertilizer use in Rabi crops.

Dr. Yamini Sharma, Assistant Professor (Fruit Science), discussed using paddy residue in mushroom cultivation and explained the management of fruit plants and nutrition gardens. She motivated farmers to adopt integrated nutrition gardening to enhance household nutrition.

Dr. Rajwinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), emphasized the importance of seed treatment for disease management in wheat crops and offered advice on insect control in residue-managed fields.

Dr. Ankush Proach, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), provided seasonal dairy management tips and discussed the nutrient potential of paddy residue for applications in biogas production and as animal fodder.

The camp concluded with an interactive session, allowing farmers and farm women to engage with experts on paddy residue management, crop cultivation, and other agricultural practices.
