A district level awareness camp was organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Punjab Agricultural University, Sangrur under the guidance of Director Extension Education, PAU Ludhiana and Director, ICAR-Attari Zone 1, Ludhiana and under the able guidance of Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Training), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur under the In-Situ Stubble Management Project (2024-25). In which more than 200 farmers from different blocks of the district participated. At the beginning of this program, Dr. Mandeep Singh warmly welcomed the farmers and made them aware about the ill effects of burning stubble. He said that burning one ton of stubble causes the loss of 400 kg of organic carbon, 5.5 kg of nitrogen, 2.3 kg of phosphorus, 25 kg of potash and 1.2 kg of sulfur. Burning of paddy stubble produces toxic gases which pollute the environment and also have adverse effects on the health of humans and animals. He strongly appealed to the farmers to manage the stubble in the field as per the recommendations of PAU. He said that by continuously ploughing the stubble in the field for many years, the use of chemical fertilizers is reduced. Which also reduces the cost of farming. He also told about the provision of stubble management agricultural machinery by KVK. Dr. Mandeep Singh also informed the farmers about the advanced varieties of wheat certified by PAU and the biofertilizer inoculation of wheat seeds and also shed light on the arrangements made by KVK for the seeds of Rabi crops. Apart from this, he also shed light on the services being provided to the farmers by Krishi Vigyan Kendra. He also motivated the farmers to increase their income by starting businesses along with farming. Those farmers were given DAP. He also informed about the four alternative sources of fertilizer.

Dr. Harbans Singh Chahal, Chief Agriculture Officer, Sangrur informed the farmers about the schemes being run by the Agriculture Department for the welfare of the farmers. He also told about the subsidy being given on agricultural machinery under the stubble management scheme and made an emotional appeal to the farmers to sow wheat without burning the stubble. He said that more than 35000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer has been arranged for the farmers in the district and the remaining 5000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer is being arranged soon. He said that this year there has been a decrease in the incidents of stubble burning in Sangrur district compared to the previous year.

Dr. Sunil Kumar, Farm Machinery Expert, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur gave information about the agricultural machinery available for wheat sowing while managing stubble in the field without burning with the farmer warriors. He highlighted the benefits of these technologies with special emphasis on new machines Smart Seeder and Surface Seeder technology.

Dr. Gurbir Kaur, Plant Protection Specialist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur informed the farmers about the treatment of seeds while sowing wheat. She also shared ideas with the farmers about the management of diseases in wheat and comprehensive management of pests.

Dr. Rukinder Preet Singh Dhaliwal, Crop Science Specialist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur shared ideas with the farmers regarding the management of urea, DAP and micronutrients in wheat. He also informed the farmers about the comprehensive control of weeds in wheat. He also informed about the things to be considered while using herbicides.

Mr. Gurpreet Singh Walia, RGR Cell, Ludhiana motivated the farmers to take care of the health of soil, water and air.

Dr. Inderjit Singh Bhatti, Agriculture Officer, Sangrur and Mr. Ramandeep Singh, District Coordinator were also specially present during the program. During the camp, all the farmers were shown a demonstration of stubble management agricultural machinery and the farmers’ queries regarding the machinery were answered.

Finally, the farmers who managed stubble in the fields were honored. Farmers were also provided with Rabi books and literature on stubble management.
