ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Jabalpur, in collaboration with ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, organized the annual review workshop of NICRA KVKs under ICAR-ATARI, Jabalpur, at ICAR-CIAE, Bhopal, today.

The Chief Guest, Dr S.K. Choudhary, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), briefed about the developments of NICRA’s achievements in Madhya Pradesh. He spoke about the simulation modeling data to get an idea of climate change. The NICRA transformation from initiatives to innovations was praised with the involvement of the village climate risk management committee, who are the real ground-level adapters. Indian agriculture, which is presently in adaptation mode, has to shift to mitigation mode for resilience to climate change, he added. Dr Choudhary urged the need to estimate greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and carbon dynamics at the farm level to better prepare for real-time climate vulnerabilities.

The Guest of Honor, Dr J.P. Sharma, former Vice-Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu & Kashmir, emphasized the importance of horizontal percolation of established climate-resilient technologies through NICRA KVKs for large-scale adoption. Also, there is a need to address micro-climate level variation in weather parameters and integrate traditional agricultural practices with precision agriculture.

Dr S.R.K. Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Jabalpur, provided an overview of NICRA’s work in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, highlighting key achievements and future plans.

Dr V.K. Singh, Director, ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad, emphasized the need to reorient the NICRA efforts to the block level with more precise data on precipitation and moisture, advocating for the development of robust datasets for better climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Dr C.R. Mehta, Director, ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal; Dr S.P. Datta, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal; and other officials were also present during the programme.

The technical sessions were held to review the progress done by 11 NICRA KVKs of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh under Zone-IX, ICAR-ATARI, Jabalpur.
