Maize TNAU foliar application information

Sure, here is an article on Maize TNAU foliar application information:

Maize is an important cereal crop that is widely grown across the world for both human consumption and animal feed. In order to achieve high yields and maximum profits, farmers need to implement effective farming practices, one of which is foliar application of nutrients.

Foliar application is the process of applying nutrients/chemicals directly to the leaves of the crop. Foliar application is commonly used for maize in the form of liquid fertilizers, micronutrients, and other beneficial chemicals, which are absorbed by the leaves and transported throughout the plant. By applying these nutrients directly to the plant, they are able to get absorbed quickly and efficiently.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) recommends the following guidelines for foliar application of nutrients for maize:

1. Application time: Foliar application of nutrients should be done during the early stages of growth, specifically from the V3 (3 leaf stage) to the V10 (10 leaf stage) growth stages. Application during this stage ensures proper uptake and utilization of nutrients by the crop.

2. Application frequency: Depending on the nutrient requirements of the crop and the soil conditions, foliar application can be done once or multiple times during the growing season. If there are visible nutrient deficiencies, then foliar application should be done more frequently.

3. Nutrient dosage: The dosage of nutrients applied through foliar application varies depending on the nutrient requirements of the crop, soil nutrient content, and stage of growth. The recommended dosage of nitrogen (N) is between 0.5-1% of the solution, phosphorus (P) is between 0.2-0.25%, potassium (K) is between 2-3%, and micronutrients like iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), boron (B) and manganese (Mn) are between 0.05-0.25%.

4. Application method: Foliar application can be done using a backpack sprayer or a tractor-mounted sprayer, depending on the size of the farm. It is recommended to use a medium or fine spray nozzle to ensure the proper distribution of the nutrient solution.

In conclusion, foliar application of nutrients can significantly improve maize yields and quality. However, caution must be exercised to ensure that the right dosage and timing of application are followed. Regular soil testing is recommended to determine the nutrient requirements of the crop. By following the guidelines set by TNAU, farmers can successfully implement foliar application and improve their maize crops.
