Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mansa, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, organized a five-day vocational training course on pig farming from September 9 to 13, 2024. The training aimed to empower farmers, farm women, and rural youth by providing scientific knowledge on pig farming as a subsidiary occupation. Thirty participants from various villages in the Mansa and Bathinda districts took part in the course.
Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Deputy Director (Training), highlighted the importance of pig farming as a profitable allied business and encouraged participants to adopt the practice on scientific lines. The course covered essential aspects of pig farming, including breeds, care and management, site selection, housing, feed preparation, and disease management.
Lectures were delivered by experts, Dr. Ajay Singh, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), who provided insights into pig breeding and management, and Dr. Akshay Goyal, Veterinary Officer, who discussed disease prevention and vaccination schedules. Additionally, Dr. Prabhdyal Singh, Fishery Officer, introduced the concept of integrated pig and fish farming.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit the PAU and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Kisan Mela in Ludhiana, enhancing their learning experience.
The training concluded with a post-knowledge test to assess the improvement in participants’ understanding of pig farming, and a WhatsApp group was created to facilitate the sharing of the latest information on piggery and animal husbandry.
