Promotional camps for wheat varieties were organized at village Kanech and Ghumnewal of Ludhiana district by the students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The activities were planned under the guidance of Dr Lopamudra Mohapatra, Assistant Professor (Extension Education). A group of students has been enrolled under RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience) programme through which they are attached to Kanech Ghumnewal villages for performing various activities. About 40 farmers attended the camp, held at Kanech Multipurpose Cooperative Society which is also a dedicated centre for farmer information. The farmers of Ghumnewal too were involved for this activity in the village-based community hall.
At the camp, discussion and lectures pertaining to the newly developed quality wheat varieties were delivered to the farmers. Besides, focus was also on the field preparation, methods of sowing encouraging the use of Happy Seeder, Super Seeder and Smart Seeder; weed control methods; use of balanced fertilization; and Integrated Pest Management. Both the student group leaders effectively planned the camp and all the 14 students in each group delivered lectures, answered the queries and managed the camp enthusiastically. The farmers were also encouraged to adopt crop varieties and technologies recommended by PAU to enhance productivity and sustainability.
The farmers showed a promising attitude towards the newly released wheat varieties especially the Punjab Chapati and PBW Biscuit 1. A farmer displayed a positive intent in adopting these newly released wheat varieties and the improved package of practices as recommended by PAU.
Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education, hailed the students for the great display of planning programmes and their skills for fine management.
Dr CS Aulakh, Dean, College of Agriculture, appreciated the students’ efforts and the role of the Department of Extension Education in training the upcoming agriculture graduates who would be a trained manpower to work for the farmers’ welfare.
