9 September 2024 In the annual meeting of the All India Rabi Pulses Project held on 02-04 September 2024 at the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas, Sehore, Bhopal, the decision to release three species of Rabi pulses developed by Pantnagar University for cultivation among the farmers was taken in the meeting of the species release committee chaired by Dr. T.R. Sharma, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. This year, it was decided to release seven species of various Rabi pulse varieties from various agricultural universities of the country and various institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, out of which three species Pant Masoor 16, Pant Matar 509 and Pant Matar 517 were developed by this university. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan, while expressing happiness over these species of Rabi pulses being identified for cultivation at the all-India level, thanked the scientists who developed these species, Dr. R.K. Dr. Panwar, Dr. S.K. Verma, Dr. Anju Arora and all the workers working in the project were congratulated. Dr. Chauhan told that so far this university has developed more than 70 varieties of different pulses for different parts of the country and some of them like Pant Masoor 8 and Pant Masoor 9 of lentil, Pant Chana 186 of gram, Pant Matar 14 and Pant Matar 243 of peas, UPAS 120 and Pant Arhar 6 of pigeon pea, Pant Urd 31 and Pant Urd 12 of urad and Pant Moong 5 and Pant Moong 9 of moong remain the first choice of farmers. He informed that last year also seven varieties of Rabi pulses were developed by this university, out of which three varieties Pant Chana 10, Pant Masoor 14 and Pant Matar 484 were recently dedicated to the farmers by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, which is a symbol of dedication of this university for the agricultural development of the country. Dr. Chauhan also informed that the Government of India has set a target to make the country self-sufficient in pulses production by the year 2027. The advanced varieties developed by this university and their production techniques have an important contribution in increasing the pulses production of the country, which has currently increased to 26 million tonnes, due to which not only the availability of pulses per person has increased but prices have also been controlled. The University’s Director Research Dr. Nain told that the university has special emphasis on increasing the income of small and marginal farmers. Dr. Nain told that this university not only is at the forefront in developing improved varieties of pulses, but is also a leader in producing breeder seeds of these varieties in sufficient quantity. He said that during the last five years the university has produced nearly 2000 quintals of breeder seeds of various pulse crops. Project Coordinator Dr. S.K. Verma informed that the lentil variety identified in this annual meeting on Rabi pulses, Pant Masoor 16, was recommended for cultivation in the northern hilly states of the country like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, mountainous regions of West Bengal, Assam and other north eastern states, Pant Matar 517 was recommended for cultivation in the north western states of the country like western Uttar Pradesh, plain areas of Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu division and Pant Matar 509 was recommended for cultivation in north eastern states like eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal.
