ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI), a constituent Institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is the only research organization in the World dedicated solely to the research on tropical tuber crops. The Institute, established in 1963 with its Headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has grown over the years into a premier research organization of international repute. Realizing the challenges ahead and the social commitments towards the farming community, ICAR-CTCRI, under the aegis of ICAR, has developed many production and processing technologies for tuber crops. Tuber crops are rich in calories, micronutrients, vitamins and antioxidants, which can address the issues related to ‘food security’, ‘hunger’, and malnutrition. With improved technologies, tuber crops are becoming future smart crops for food and nutrition.
About the brainstorming workshop
ICAR-CTCRI is pleased to organize a brainstorming workshop on “Harnessing Crop Wild Relatives for Tuber Crops Improvement”. This workshop will showcase the genetic diversity and traits in Crop Wild Relatives (CWRs) or Land Race (LR) to provide breeders with valuable genetic resources for improving traits such as disease resistance, yield potential and nutritional quality in tropical tuber crops. It will bring together the international community to debate the current status and future enhanced utilization of CWRs and LR diversity for improving production, increasing food security and sustaining the environment. This workshop will also identify and address the solutions for barriers like incompatibility, sterility, ploidy difference, flowering to interspecific hybridization with wild relatives, which can open novel genetic combinations and introduce desirable traits into tropical tuber crops, enhancing their agronomic performance and market value. Anticipating future challenges and opportunities, this workshop will also enable breeders to develop forward-thinking strategies that leverage the adaptive potential of wild relatives to enhance the resilience, sustainability, and nutritional value of tropical tuber crops, ensuring food security for future generations.
