Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Hoshiarpur, in collaboration with the Department of Plant Pathology at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, organized an awareness camp to tackle the yellow rust disease in wheat. Held on February 15, 2024, at the KVK premises, the event drew experts, farmers, and farmwomen eager to enhance their understanding of agricultural challenges and solutions.
Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Hoshiarpur, extended a warm welcome and provided insights into various farmer welfare activities undertaken by the KVK. He sensitized attendees about the prevalence of insect pests in major rabi crops and shared integrated pest management strategies to mitigate their impact effectively.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Amarjit Singh, Principal Extension Scientist from the Department of Plant Pathology at PAU Ludhiana, shed light on the characteristics and spread patterns of yellow rust disease. He emphasized the environmental conditions conducive to disease development and discussed preventive measures to combat it effectively. Additionally, he highlighted other prevalent diseases affecting crops, such as stem rot of berseem, pea rust & late blight, black scurf, and common scab diseases of potatoes.
Dr Parminder Singh, Plant Pathologist from PAU Ludhiana, provided valuable insights into disease management strategies for combating yellow rust. He recommended specific fungicides for application and stressed the importance of regular monitoring and timely intervention to prevent the disease’s spread.
During the event, scientists from KVK Hoshiarpur shared additional tips on seasonal management of dairy animals, value addition & processing of agricultural produce, beekeeping, and integrated nutrition gardening. The interactive session facilitated fruitful exchanges between experts and farmers, addressing queries and fostering a deeper understanding of agricultural best practices.
