With horticulture playing a crucial role in the proliferation of agrarian economy, the Skill Development Centre of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is putting in its best efforts to boost the cultivation of horticultural crops in the state. Keeping this in view, the Centre designed a five-day training course on the “Cultivation of Dragon Fruit and other Fruit Crops,” in which 25 young farmers and rural women participated. Held under the guidance of the Director of Extension Education Dr MS Bhullar, the course evoked keen interest of the participants in the nouveau scientific techniques for the successful fruit cultivation.

Dr (Mrs) Rupinder Kaur Toor, Associate Director (Skill Development), said that horticulture was emerging as a great source of income, serving the commercial as well as household needs.

Dr Lavleesh Garg, Extension Scientist, while outlining the key training programmes organized by the Centre, informed that several farmers, women and youths were availing occupational and monetary benefits from skill oriented training courses.

Fruit scientists, namely Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, Dr Anirudh Thakur, Dr Gurteg Singh, Dr Gagandeep Kaur, Dr Yogesh Kokhar, Dr Arash Alam Singh Gill, Dr Monica Gupta, Dr Navprem Singh, Dr Manveer Kaur, Dr Kirandeep Kaur, Dr Sandeep Singh, Dr Harpreet Singh, Dr Sukhjeet Kaur Jawanda, Dr Trina Adhikari, Dr Kuldeep Singh Bhullar, Dr Arshdeep Singh, Dr Vikas Kumar, Dr Sunjala Sharma and Dr Vinay Kumar imparted theoretical and practical trainings in different aspects of fruit cultivation. Besides, the trainees toured Issewal village of Ludhiana district for hands-on-experience.
