A 3-days Human Resource Development Programme on Scientific Agri-Horticultural Practices to augment the Income from Small Farming was organised by Directorate of Extensions and Farms, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences in collaboration with ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata for KVKs of West Bengal.

Prof. Shyam Sundar Dana, Vice Chancellor, WBUAFS, emphasised the need of capacity building programme in helping entrepreneurship development through improved agricultural and horticultural practices among the farming community of the state.

Prof. Gautam Saha, Vice Chancellor, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, spoke about the importance of such training programmes in order to improve the livelihood of the small and marginal farmers.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, highlighted the need of employing cutting-edge technologies, such as sensor-based drones and artificial intelligence, to address the livelihoods as well as better return in rural areas.

Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Prof. Prabhat Pal, DEE, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Cooch Behar, Prof. Pintoo Bandapadhaya, DEE, BCKV, Dr. Partha Das, Registrar, WBUAFS, Dr. Keshab Chandra Dhara, Deputy Director (Farms), WBUAFS, and Dr. Nilendu Jyoti Maitra, Deputy Director (Research), WBUAFS were also present during the programme.

The program involved five major areas of scientific agri-horticultural practices such as soil health, impact of climate change on crop and water resources, recent trend of pulses and oilseed production, soil borne diseases and extension strategies to mitigate the challenges faced by KVKs.

 A total of 36 trainees from 10 KVK’s across different agro-climatic zones of West Bengal participated in the programme.
