Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kapurthala working under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana and ICAR ATARI Zone-I, Ludhiana organized district level training program on crop residue management at its campus on 16.10.2023. More than 100 in-charges of eco-clubs from senior secondary schools of Kapurthala district participated in this event. The event was also graced by more than 50 progressive farmers and farm-women of the district. Mrs. Daljit Kaur, District Education Officer, Kapurthala was chief-guest on this occasion. He emphasized on surface seeding of wheat crop as it is a low cost technology and also helps in timely sowing of wheat crop. Dr Pardeep Kumar, advised the farmers to adopt bio-fortified wheat varieties for better health and home consumption. Management of insects and pests in residue managed fields was discussed by Dr Suman, Asstt. Prof. (Plant Protection). She also stressed on use of cultural as well as poison bait formulations for the effective management of rodents. Benefits of sowing wheat with smart seeder while retaining the paddy straw on the surface was elaborated by Dr. Bindu, Associate Professor (Agril. Engg.). Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Assoc. Prof. (Veg. Sci.) enlightened on benefits of fruit and vegetable nutrition garden to get pesticide free produce and also to fulfill daily nutritional requirements. She motivated the participants to use mulch in vegetable crops like turmeric, muskmelon as it suppress the weeds, conserve soil moisture and improves the quality of crop. Dr. Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Trg.) said that in present time families are becoming nuclear and under this structure women and children have crucial role in decision making. So, KVK took this initiative to involve eco-clubs for wider dissemination of the message of paddy residue management to the masses. Mrs. Daljit Kaur in her remarks said that KVK’s cannot approach to all the villages but we have schools in every village so the message can be delivered through the children in the shortest time. She further said that they will collaborate with KVK for such ventures in future also. She urged in-charges of eco-clubs to deliver the message of paddy residue management.
