Control measures for shoot & fruit borer in brinjal

As a farmer, one of the biggest challenges when cultivating brinjal (also known as eggplant) is controlling the devastating effects of the shoot and fruit borer. The shoot and fruit borer can cause a significant decrease in yield if left unattended. In this article, we will discuss some effective control measures that can overcome this harmful pest.

1. Crop rotation: Crop rotation can be clearly effective in reducing the population of crop pests, as when the same crop is cultivated for a longer period at the same location, the pest population builds up. Crop rotation helps in reducing the pest population as the pest attack is mostly limited to a particular crop.

2. Use of insecticides: One of the most effective methods of controlling the shoot and fruit borer is the use of insecticides. There are several effective insecticides that are readily available on the market today. However, it is important to note that the use of insecticides should be carried out with care and in a controlled manner.

3. Organic Pesticides: Using organic pesticides is a natural and eco-friendly way to control pests. The use of neem oil, garlic extract, and other botanically derived chemicals can aid in the control of the insects. It is critical to ensure that the organic pesticide coats every part of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and fruits.

4. Trapping: Another method of controlling the shoot and fruit borer is the use of traps. This method targets adult female insects during the early stages of the crop cultivation process. Traps are placed around the plants to capture the moths, and this method leads to a significant reduction in the number of eggs laid.

5. Hot water treatment: Brinjal fruits can be treated with hot water during processing to kill the eggs, larvae, and pupae of fruit borers. Immerse the fruits in hot water above 52 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes, and this will kill the pests in the fruit.

In conclusion, the above-mentioned control measures can be incredibly helpful in controlling the shoot and fruit borer. It is essential to note that a combination of methods may be required to achieve optimal effectiveness. Therefore, farmers should choose the most suitable and easily adaptable methods depending on their conditions to keep their crops safe throughout the harvest season.
