PAU-KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, HOSHIARPUR ORGANIZED AN EXPOSURE VISIT OF WHEAT CROP SOWN WITH HAPPY SEEDER AT VILLAGE THINDA

PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur working under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I organized an exposure visit of the wheat crop sown with Happy Seeder at village Thinda on 14-1-2026 for awareness and promotion of paddy residue management technologies.

While addressing the farmers in this event, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur underscored the imperative need to forsake residue burning for the preservation of environment. He elucidated the adverse consequences of crop residue burning and rallied farmers to actively champion the cause of non-burning of paddy residue. Dr. Bons mentioned that progressive farmers of this village are pioneers in adopting Happy Seeder technology in the district and also praised them for effectively managing paddy residue over the years. Furthermore, Dr. Bons imparted valuable insights into integrated weed, nutrient and pest management strategies in wheat crop.

For the benefit of the farmers, PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur experts delivered technical lectures during this programme. While giving detailed information about this technique, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), Dr. Ajab Singh, explained that Happy Seeder machine cuts the straw in front of furrow openers and throws it over the sown crop in a single operation which acts as mulch to improve the soil health. This machine is a combination of rotor having blades that chop paddy straw into small pieces and a zero-till drill for drilling wheat. He further stated that the Happy Seeder machine can be operated by 50 HP tractor and can cover 6-8 acres/day. Associate Professor (Animal Science), Dr. Parminder Singh, shed light on the paramount significance of dairy animal management in winter season and alternate use of paddy straw for animal feed & fodder.

Several progressive farmers of village Thinda including Sarpanch S. Harpreet Singh, S. Dalwinder Singh, S. Onkar Singh, S. Mahinder Singh, S. Kulvir Singh, S. Baljit Singh, S. Harjit Singh, S. Manjit Singh and S. Daler Singh from village Kotla were present at the event.

The farmers visited the Happy Seeder sown wheat plots of S. Onkar Singh and S. Dalwinder Singh, who had sown wheat with this technology on 8 acre area, for gaining first-hand information on the performance of the technology and shared their queries regarding the same with the experts.
