August 16, 2024. The 78th Independence Day of the country was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the university. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan, hoisted the flag at Tarai Bhawan and Gandhi Park and made the students, teachers, officers and employees take a pledge to serve the country. He remembered the martyrs and freedom fighters on the foundation of whose sacrifice our India stands independently. In his address on this occasion, he remembered Sardar Udham Singh in whose name this district is established.

He told that Pantnagar University, established in 1960 as an agricultural university, had the challenge of taking agriculture forward. New technology had to be developed for research development in the university so that the new technologies developed by the scientists of the university could be taken to the farmers and entrepreneurs. He told that more than 50 thousand human resources have been developed by the university. Our students / alumni are serving in various fields not only in the country but also abroad. He told that from 1967 to 1972, a campaign was started by ICAR that we have to be self sufficient in grains, for this I.A.R.I. Pantnagar University and Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana were included, which succeeded in bringing the Green Revolution and Pantnagar University played a major role in this, due to which today we are not only self sufficient in grains but also have surplus. He told that the purpose of establishing the university was to provide sufficient food to the increasing population, for which purpose work was started on wheat, rice and other crops through Green Revolution in the university and due to the tireless efforts of scientists and farmers, today we are either at number 1 or number 2 in the world in grains and the growth rate in milk, horticulture and fisheries is 10 percent. He told that 19 crore population of the country is malnourished and now special attention will have to be given to provide nutritious food. 34 percent children in the country are victims of malnutrition, to reduce which scientists need to develop new techniques. He said that Pantnagar is a leading university and hence new technologies will have to be developed accepting the challenges of malnutrition. Value added products have been developed by various colleges of the university which include Kodo and Bajra Lassi and Millet Chocolate etc. which will help in removing malnutrition. Talking about productivity, he said that for the last several years the average productivity of wheat on the university farm was 40 to 42 quintals per hectare which has been achieved this year to 50 quintals per hectare, for which the Chief General Manager Farm and his team deserve congratulations. In the institutional ranking which is based on research, Pantnagar University has achieved 38th rank at the national level, for which all the scientists, officers and employees of the university deserve congratulations. Last year, 7 varieties of pulses were developed by the university while at the national level a total of 21 varieties were approved by ICAR. He informed that recently a total of 109 species were dedicated to the country by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, which includes 4 species of the university, which is a matter of pride. Whatever new technology is developed by the university is made available to the farmers. Krishi Vigyan Kendras have played a big role in making agricultural technology reach the farmers. In his address, the Vice Chancellor congratulated all the units on their achievements and said that we will remain at the forefront only due to the tireless efforts of everyone.
