The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib, hosted a three-day training workshop named “Cultivation of Oyster Mushroom” from February 24-26, 2026, as part of the AICRP Mushroom Project. The training program was attended by 35 selected farmers (27 females and 8 males) from various villages in Kolasib district (Thingdawl and Meidum). The training program’s major purpose was to provide participants with hands-on experience in oyster mushroom cultivation. Experts (scientists and young professionals) from ICAR, Kolasib provided theoretical and practical teaching. The training program focused on spawn preparation, substrate preparation, the infrastructure required to establish a mushroom farm, crop cultivation and management, disease and pest management, post-harvest handling/value addition, and the economics of osyter mushroom cultivation.
The AICRP on Mushroom, Kolasib, Mizoram, provides training and high-quality oyster spawn to enthusiastic farmers. This endeavor is expected to strengthen local agricultural systems, promote farm diversification, and provide economic opportunities for Mizoram’s hill farmers. With the right training, technological support, and availability to high-quality spawn, oyster mushroom cultivation has the potential to become a new source of income for hill farmers.
At the valedictory function, farmers and scientists had fruitful discussions, and Dr Sunil Doley, HoRC (Mizoram), distributed inputs (2 kg oyster spawn per farmer). At the close of the session, Dr. Vikas Pali, PI of AICRP Mushroom, offered a vote of gratitude, highlighting the importance of oyster mushroom cultivation for resource-poor tribal farmers and mushroom production in improving farm income. He focused on mushroom growing as a year-round source of revenue.
