Varieties of wheat – HD-2733, HD-2824, Rajendra Genhu-346, N.W-1014 (Jagdish), PWB 343, PWB 443

As one of the most cultivated grains in the world, wheat comes in a variety of types with different characteristics that can adapt to specific environments and meet various market demands. In India, farmers rely on several wheat varieties to ensure a consistent supply and quality of this staple food, including HD-2733, HD-2824, Rajendra Genhu-346, N.W-1014 (Jagdish), PWB 343, and PWB 443.

HD-2733 is a high-yielding wheat variety developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and recommended for the irrigated and timely sown conditions of the northwestern plains zone. It has a medium to tall plant height, resistance to leaf and stripe rust, and good kernel characteristics such as high grain weight and protein content.

HD-2824 is another wheat variety developed by ICAR, suitable for late-sown conditions and rainfed areas of the northwestern plains zone. It has a semi-dwarf plant type, resistance to leaf, stripe, and stem rust, and good baking quality with high gluten strength and stability.

Rajendra Genhu-346 is a locally evolved wheat variety in Bihar, widely cultivated in the eastern region of India. It has a tall plant height, resistance to leaf and stripe rust, and good milling and nutritional qualities, making it a popular choice for the chapati and biscuit industries.

N.W-1014 or Jagdish is a wheat variety developed by the University of Agricultural Sciences in Raichur, Karnataka, and recommended for the peninsular zone of India. It has a semi-dwarf plant type, resistance to stem and stripe rust, and good kernel characteristics with moderate grain weight and protein content.

PWB 343 (or PBW 343) and PWB 443 (or PBW 443) are two wheat varieties developed by Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and commonly grown in the northwestern plains zone of India. PWB 343 is a high-yielding variety suitable for irrigated conditions, with a semi-dwarf plant type, resistance to leaf and stripe rust, and good baking quality. PWB 443 is a rust-resistant variety that can withstand diseases and adverse environmental conditions, with a medium plant height, high grain weight, and good milling and chapati-making properties.
