Suitable varieties of Paddy (Jhona)

As one of the most important cereal crops in the world, paddy or rice is consumed by billions of people every day. In Bangladesh, one of the leading varieties of paddy is Jhona. Jhona paddy is known for its high yield and excellent quality, making it a popular choice for farmers across the country. In this article, we will explore the characteristics of Jhona paddy, its cultivation, and management practices.

Characteristics of Jhona Paddy

Jhona paddy is a short-duration variety that takes about 120 days to mature. It has a medium height and is highly resistant to lodging. The grains of Jhona paddy are medium to long-sized with white or light brown color. One of the most significant advantages of Jhona paddy is its high yield. Usually, it produces up to 4-5 tons per hectare, making it economically viable for farmers.

Cultivation Practices

Jhona paddy is suitable for cultivation in a variety of soils, including clayey, loamy, and saline soils. It requires an average temperature of 25-35°C and an annual rainfall of about 1,500 to 2,500 mm. The ideal period for planting Jhona paddy is between April and May for the Boro season, October-November for the Aman season, and April-June for the Aus season.

Before planting, the field’s soil should be plowed and harrowed well, ensuring that it is smooth and free from clumps. Seedlings should be grown in nurseries for about 25-30 days and later transplanted to the main field with a spacing of 20cm x 20cm. It is essential to provide adequate irrigation and fertilization, especially during the vegetative phase. The use of bio-fertilizers and organic manure for improved yield is also highly recommended.

Management Practices

Weed control is essential for the healthy growth of Jhona paddy. It is recommended to use pre-emergence herbicides to reduce weed growth. Regular monitoring of pests and diseases is essential, and any infestation should be treated promptly with appropriate pesticides. Proper drainage is crucial, especially during the rainy season, to avoid waterlogging.
