Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna: Empowering India’s Farmers
The agriculture sector forms the backbone of India’s economy, employing a significant portion of the population and contributing greatly to the nation’s GDP. However, the vulnerability and financial instability faced by farmers have long been a pressing concern. In recognition of this, the Government of India introduced the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna (PM Kisan) in February 2019, with the primary objective of providing direct income support to small and marginal farmers across the country.
PM Kisan aims to augment the income of farmers by transferring a fixed amount of ₹6,000 per year directly into their bank accounts. The financial aid is provided in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each, ensuring a more regular and consistent cash inflow for the farmers.
One of the key features of PM Kisan is its inclusive nature. For farmers to be eligible for the scheme, they must own cultivable land and possess a valid Aadhaar card, a unique identification number issued by the Indian government. The enrollment process is simple, with farmers being able to register both online and offline. Several designated centers and Common Service Centers (CSCs) have been established nationally, which assist farmers in the registration process and ensure maximum participation.
The central government bears the entire financial burden of the scheme, and the funds are transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. The scheme is implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare at the central level, and by the respective state governments at the state level. This cooperative effort has ensured the effective and efficient implementation of PM Kisan across the nation.
In addition to providing financial assistance, PM Kisan also aims to enhance the overall well-being of farmers. The scheme enables them to gain access to agricultural loans, farming equipment, and better seeds, thereby increasing productivity and reducing dependence on informal credit sources.
