Information on Fertilizer Dose in Bengal Gram Crop

Bengal gram or chana, also known as Chickpea is an important pulse crop, which is widely cultivated across India and other parts of the world. It is highly nutritious and rich in protein, minerals, and vitamins. However, to obtain a good yield from Bengal gram crop, it is essential to adopt proper cultivation practices, including timely and adequate application of fertilizers.

Fertilizer Dose for Bengal Gram Crop

The fertilizer requirement for Bengal gram crop may vary depending on a range of factors, such as soil fertility, cropping history, climatic conditions, and the variety grown. However, as a general guideline, farmers can use the following fertilizer doses for Bengal gram crop:

– Nitrogen (N): Bengal gram requires around 20-25 kg of nitrogen per hectare. However, applying excess nitrogen can lead to lodging of plants and reduced yields. Therefore, it is recommended to split the nitrogen dose into two to three application depending on the stage of the crop. Approximately 50% of nitrogen should be applied at the time of sowing, and the remaining 50% should be split into two doses and applied during branching and flowering stages.

– Phosphorus(P): Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth and development of Bengal gram crop. The recommended dose of phosphorus for Bengal gram crop is around 30-35 kg per hectare. The middle and deep soils are usually found to be phosphorus deficient. Adequate care should be taken with regard to the safer side of application rate in these soils.

– Potassium (K): Potassium is necessary for the development of root system which is important for the growth of the plant and better seed yield. The standard dose of potassium for Bengal gram crop is about 15-20 kg per hectare. The application of potassium can be split into two equally spaced doses and applied at the last irrigation stage.

Foliar Application of Fertilizers

In addition to the soil application of fertilizers, farmers can also opt for foliar application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium-based fertilizers for Bengal gram crop. It helps in enhancing the efficiency of nutrients uptake by the plants. However, care should be taken to ensure that the foliar application is done at the right time and with proper concentration.

Conclusion

Bengal gram crop is an important source of nutrition and is highly valued in the market. By adopting proper agronomic practices, including timely and balanced application of fertilizers, farmers can improve the quality and quantity of their produce, which in turn, can improve their income. So, it is highly recommended to farmers to follow the prescribed fertilizer doses and agronomic recommendations for maximum benefit.
