Information regarding control of leaf folder in paddy (jhona) crop

As a crop that is extensively grown both for sustenance and commerce, paddy or rice is a vital agricultural product in many countries around the world. One of the biggest challenges farmers face when cultivating paddy is controlling the leaf folder, also known as jhona in some regions.

The leaf folder is a pest that attacks the leaves of the paddy plant, causing them to roll up and ultimately reduce photosynthesis. The pest is most active during the months of July to September, but can also occur during any other time of the year depending on climatic conditions.

To prevent the damage caused by leaf folders, farmers need to implement suitable control measures. Some of these measures include:

1. Cultural Control – Crop rotation, early planting, plowing and levelling of the field, and maintenance of proper drainage are all cultural practices that can help reduce leaf folder infestation.

2. Biological Control – Introducing natural predators or parasites of the leaf folder, such as egg parasitoids, can control their spread.

3. Chemical Control – The use of insecticides either prophylactically or when an infestation has occurred.

While all the above methods can be effective in controlling leaf folders, each has its limitations and must be used judiciously. The use of insecticides should be viewed as a last resort. Overusing these chemicals can lead to the development of resistance by the pest, environmental pollution, and can pose a threat to farmers and consumers’ health. Additionally, it is important to note that some varieties of paddy are resistant to leaf folders. Therefore, farmers should consider planting resistant varieties to minimize the risk of leaf folder infestation.

In conclusion, controlling leaf folders in paddy crops is a critical aspect of ensuring a bountiful harvest. Farmers should consider implementing an integrated pest management approach that combines cultural, biological and chemical control mechanisms-most importantly reducing dependence on chemical pesticides to keep their fields free from these pests.
