Improved Varieties of Bajra: Enhancing the Nutritional and Economic Potential of Millets

Millet is a group of cereal crops that includes several small-seeded grasses, such as sorghum, finger millet, pearl millet, and foxtail millet. These crops have been cultivated for thousands of years in various parts of Africa and Asia, where they are important sources of food, feed, and fiber. Among these millets, bajra or pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is the most widely grown and consumed crop in India, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions. Moreover, appropriate policy and institutional frameworks, such as subsidies, incentives, research and extension services, and market support, should be in place to facilitate the adoption and scaling up of millet-based farming systems.
