Fertilizer Dose at the Time of Pea (Matar) Sowing

Pea, commonly known as Matar in India, is a staple food and an important cash crop cultivated throughout the country. The crop season for peas differs from region to region, but mostly, it is grown during the winter months. However, to get a good yield, it is crucial to provide proper nutrition to the plants, especially at the time of sowing. Here’s a quick guide on the fertilizer dose at the time of pea sowing:

Types of Fertilizers for Pea Sowing:

There are mainly two types of fertilizers that are commonly used for pea sowing – organic and inorganic.

Organic Fertilizers – Compost, Farmyard Manure (FYM), Vermicompost, etc.

Inorganic Fertilizers – Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) and other micronutrient fertilizers.

Fertilizer Dose:

The fertilizer dose for peas at the time of sowing depends on several factors such as soil fertility, nutrient availability, crop growth stage, and fertility status. Ideally, it is recommended to use a balanced dose of NPK or vermicompost. However, the following are the recommended dosage of inorganic fertilizers for peas at the time of sowing:

Nitrogen:

Peas need a minimal amount of nitrogen, and it is best to use nitrogenous fertilizer too early because nitrogen is liable to volatilization and leaching. For every 100 square meters of land, a minimum of 25-30 kg of nitrogen per hectare can be used as the standard dose.

Phosphorus:

Phosphorus is one of the essential nutrients required for the growth and development of the root system. It also plays a vital role in plant metabolism and energy transfer. For every 100 square meters, a minimum of 50-60 kg of phosphorus per hectare is used as the standard dose.

Potassium:

Potassium is an important nutrient for plant growth, which helps in water regulation and protein synthesis. In the case of peas, potassium helps in the plant’s resistance against disease and pests. For every 100 square meters, a minimum of 40-50 kg of potassium per hectare is used as the standard dose.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the application of organic fertilizers along with inorganic fertilizers at the time of pea sowing is crucial for achieving a successful harvest. Farmers should follow the recommended doses while keeping in mind various other factors that can impact plant growth and ensure that the sowing is done under proper climatic conditions. By following the proper fertilizer dose, farmers can ensure optimal growth and crop yield.
