PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana: An Initiative to Support Farmers

Farmers are the backbone of any country’s economy, and they are one of the most important community as well. In India, around 60% of its population depends on farming, and the country is well known for its agriculture exports worldwide. Agriculture, in India, has always been seen as a primary economic activity, but the farmers’ lives have not been easy. The agriculture sector faces various challenges such as vulnerability to natural conditions, high input costs, and lack of support from the government. However, things are changing slowly with the introduction of schemes like PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Yojana is a government-run scheme initiated in 2019. This scheme is aimed to provide financial assistance to small and marginal farmers who have landholding up to two hectares and enable them to have access to various agricultural resources. The scheme comes up with an annual budget of Rs 65,000 crore and is estimated to cover around 12 crore farmers. The government provides up to Rs 6,000 annually to each eligible farmer’s bank account via direct bank transfer. The scheme is implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

The primary objective of the PM-Kisan scheme is to support the farmers’ income and living conditions and help them buy inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and others. The scheme aims to provide direct financial assistance and support farmers with cash incentives for their livelihood. The scheme is not limited to any specific crop or area and allows farmers to use the cash benefits to enhance their income by cultivating multiple crops.

To enroll for the PM-Kisan scheme, farmers have to meet the following criteria:

1. Only small and marginal farmers with land holding up to 2 hectares are eligible to benefit.

2. Farmers should have an Aadhaar number.

3. The landholding ownership must be in the farmer’s name to avail the benefits.

4. The eligible farmers must have an operational bank account in their name.

The PM-Kisan scheme has undoubtedly played a significant role in uplifting the farmers in India. With its active implementation, the government has targeted assisting below-average performing agriculture areas and small farmers. The scheme has also successfully dealt with the bureaucratic hurdles faced by the farmers and streamlined the fund transfer process. The scheme has also allowed farmers to explore new markets and invest in various innovations to enhance their production.

In conclusion, the PM-Kisan scheme is a much-needed move in the right direction to support farmers’ livelihoods in India. The Indian government’s focus on the country’s agriculture sector is quite promising and aims to strengthen the country’s economy. The scheme has undoubtedly created a ray of hope for the farmers who were struggling to make ends meet and has helped them achieve a sense of financial stability. Nevertheless, the government needs to ensure the scheme’s transparency, proper implementation, and timely distribution of funds to achieve maximum impact.
