The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN) is a scheme launched by the Government of India under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in February 2019. The aim of this scheme is to provide financial assistance and income support to the small and marginal farmers across the country. It is aimed at boosting the income of farmers, thereby improving their quality of life.
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, an amount of Rs. 6,000 per year is provided to small and marginal farmers, payable in three instalments of Rs. 2,000 each. The scheme is applicable to all farmer families in India and provides direct benefit transfer (DBT) of the amount to the farmer’s bank account. The scheme came into effect from December 2018 and has been implemented retrospectively from 1st December 2018.
In order to be eligible for the PM-KISAN scheme, the farmer should own cultivable land up to 2 hectares. The scheme also covers landless farmers who are engaged in the farming of poultry, cattle-rearing, bee-keeping, and other allied activities. The scheme is not applicable to institutional landholders or farmer families falling in the high-income group.
The PM-KISAN scheme has been implemented with the help of state governments and UTs. The Centre provides 100% of the financial assistance and the state governments are responsible for the identification of the beneficiaries and the transfer of funds to their bank accounts. The scheme has been implemented through the PM-KISAN Portal which has been set up for the purpose.
The PM-KISAN scheme has been a great help to farmers across the country. It provides much-needed income support to small and marginal farmers who form the backbone of the Indian farming community. The scheme has been particularly beneficial for farmers who are in distress due to droughts, floods, or any other calamity. With the direct transfer of funds into their bank accounts, farmers are able to utilise the money for various farming purposes, thereby further boosting their income.
In conclusion, the PM-KISAN scheme is a welcome step by the Government of India to provide financial assistance and income support to small and marginal farmers across the country. The scheme has benefited numerous farmers and has been instrumental in improving their quality of life. With the continued implementation of the scheme and the active participation of state governments and UTs, it is expected that the PM-KISAN scheme will further uplift the lives of farmers and contribute to their overall welfare.
