A two day training programme on Value Added Products of Fish was conducted at KVK, Kannur under the CIFT-SCSP component from 24/01/2023 to 25/01/2023. The programme was jointly organized by ICAR-CIFT, Cochin and ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kannur. The training was conducted to create awareness regarding the scope of fish processing and the self-employment opportunities in the area. In the programme, both theory and practical sessions were included. The technical sessions were handled by Dr. Sreepriya Prakasan (Scientist, Fish Processing Division, ICAR-CIFT). The demonstration of the preparation of fish-based value-added products was assisted by Mrs. Anjali D (Young Professional (I), Fish Processing Division, ICAR-CIFT) and Mrs. Lovely (Supporting staff, Fish Processing Division, ICAR-CIFT). A total of 13 participants from different panchayat of Kannur district attended the programme. In the presentation, the overview of diverse value-added products and the requirements for a start-up in the area of fish processing were covered.  The hands-on training was given to the participants on handling and pre-processing of fish, preparation of fish pickle, dry prawn chutney powder, fish momos, coated shrimp, fish balls, fish finger and fish cutlet. The protocol for fish drying, packaging and preparation of byproducts from secondary raw materials was also briefed to the participants.

During the valedictory function arranged on 25.01.2023, Dr. Jayaraj P, programme coordinator, KVK, Kannur urged the participants to reap the maximum benefit by utilising the support given to the stakeholders under SCSP component programmes. Dr. Sr

A plan for arranging an exposure visit to ICAR-CIFT for those interested participants who wish to take up business in the fish processing sector was also discussed in the meeting.  The trainees gave positive feedback on the outcome of the training programme and expressed their satisfaction with the programme. In their feedback, they pointed out that the fish farmers will be highly benefited if they can convert their produce to value-added products that fetch a higher price in the market and the technologies will help them to increase the demand for freshwater fish. The valedictory function was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Elizabeth, KVK, Kannur.
