In a significant step toward enhancing rural health and sustainable agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kapurthala, organized a special outreach program on May 9, 2025, in the village of Sherpur Sada. The initiative aimed to raise awareness among the farming community about the health benefits of growing and using herbal plants, particularly those developed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).

Recognizing the rising incidence of lifestyle and common ailments among people of all age groups, the program focused on promoting home-based remedies through the cultivation of specific herbal plants. Experts from KVK educated farmers on how plants like Kali Tulsi, Ashwagandha, Gurmar, and Insulin plant can serve as effective, natural alternatives for managing a variety of health conditions. One hundred eighty plants of abovesaid herbal species were provided to these villages.

The scientists emphasized that many diseases, especially those related to immunity, stress, diabetes, and digestion, can be effectively managed or prevented through the regular use of these medicinal plants. They encouraged villagers to integrate these herbs into their daily lives—not only as a preventive healthcare measure but also as a step toward self-reliance and reduced dependency on synthetic drugs.

As part of this new initiative, KVK successfully saturated two villages—Sherpur Sada and Kulara—by distributing and planting a wide range of medicinal herbs. The villagers welcomed the effort, showing enthusiasm to adopt herbal cultivation in their homes and surroundings.

This drive marks the beginning of a broader campaign by KVK Kapurthala to promote herbal gardening in rural Punjab, empowering communities to harness the healing power of nature while also preserving traditional knowledge and practices.
