Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kapurthala, under the aegis of Director Extension PAU Ludhiana and in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Kapurthala, conducted a one-day training program for Kisan Mitras under the pilot project on Kharif Maize.
Dr. Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Training), KVK Kapurthala, addressed the gathering and expressed concern over the declining groundwater levels in Punjab due to the over-dependence on paddy cultivation. He pointed out that many blocks in the state have been classified as “dark zones” owing to excessive groundwater extraction. As a more sustainable alternative, he emphasized the promotion of Kharif maize, which is sown with the onset of the monsoon and harvested from September to October. It requires significantly less irrigation and can help conserve water resources.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, Assistant Professor of Agronomy, offered expert guidance on advanced agronomic practices aimed at enhancing grain yield in Kharif maize. He urged farmers to adopt high-yielding, water-efficient Kharif maize hybrids recommended by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for improved productivity and resource use efficiency. Dr. Gagandeep Dhawan encouraged farmers to implement Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices in maize cultivation to enhance crop yields, preserve soil health, and lower input costs through balanced and efficient nutrient use. The training was designed to equip Kisan Mitras with scientific knowledge and best practices to promote Kharif maize as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to paddy cultivation in the region. Dr. Rajinder Kumar provided an in-depth overview of the major diseases and insect pests affecting Kharif maize, along with effective strategies for their management.
The event was graced by Dr. Tejpal Singh, Joint Director Agriculture (JDA), and Dr. Surinderpal Singh Josan, Agriculture Officer (Maize), who commended the KVK team for organizing and delivering the impactful training program.
