Sowing method in cauliflower crop

As one of the most popular cruciferous vegetables, cauliflower has been cultivated for centuries and is known for its health benefits and unique, nutty flavor. Sowing is one of the critical steps in the cultivation of cauliflower plants, which aim to ensure a healthy yield come harvest time.

Sowing cauliflower is typically done indoors or in a greenhouse. It can be planted in a seed tray or plug trays filled with good quality soil or seed compost, ideally containing perlite or vermiculite, which helps with drainage. The soil should be slightly moist, but not too wet, to avoid fungus diseases. Sow the seeds thinly in the tray and cover them with 1-2mm of vermiculite or sieved soil. It is also important to label the trays with the variety name and sowing date.

The ideal temperature for germinating the cauliflower seeds is between 18-22°C, so it’s best to place the trays on a heated propagator or an airing cupboard. Once the seedlings have emerged, remove the cover and move them to the light source, achieving the brightest light possible and a constant temperature of about 16°C. Finally, thin the seedlings to one plant per cell after they have grown to two to three true leaves.

Transplanting is the next stage of planting the cauliflower plants. About 28 to 30 days after sowing, unless they are to be left in the seed tray for a few more weeks, they will be ready for transplanting into their final location or container. The final location must be weed-free, well-drained, with plenty of organic matter and soil that has been prepared beforehand.

For optimal growth, cauliflower plants prefer full sun. Make shallow, circular holes in the soil about 30cm apart before placing the seedlings into the pre-dug holes. Press soil firmly around the seedlings to reduce the risk of transplant shock, and water well to support the plant’s roots until they adapt to their new surroundings. Once the transplanting is complete, the surrounding soil should be slightly mounded to enhance the development of the cauliflower head.
