ICAR-IVRI has organized the first “Workshop & Follow-up Interface Meet” with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Himachal Pradesh on 11th June 2024. The meeting was graced by the Chief Guest Dr. Triveni Dutt, Director & Vice –Chancellor, ICARIVRI, Izatnagar, and Guest of honour Dr. Sandeep Rattan, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Himachal Pradesh.
Dr. Rupasi Tiwari, Joint Director (EE) while welcoming the dignitaries presented the action taken by IVRI on the various issues flagged during the last interface meeting such as start of research work on utilization of native unconventional forages as feed resource, initiative to start new project on mapping of forage bioresearches of North West Himalayan Region and their use for environmental-friendly livestock production, study on metabolic and deficiency in livestock’s, and training given on the azolla and silage making. Further, she presented the brief on the expectations of participants from department animal husbandry, Himachal Pradesh based on input given while registering the programme.
In reply to the most significant problems of livestock’s in your region, the participants identified the repeat breeding, infertility, metabolic and nutritional deficiency diseases, shortage of feed and fodder, ectoparasitism, haemoprotozoan diseases, mastitis, Foot rot and problem were stray animals as most serious concern. The lack of well-equipped lab, pen-side diagnostic tests, trained staff and problem in the differential diagnosis were the most common problems faced by veterinary official at the field. The participants shown their interest in the several technologies such as rapid diagnostic kits, Hands on training in recent disease diagnostic methods, Smart portable lifting assemblies for large animals and ICT tools for updates on current advancements in clinical, managemental and value addition. The participants showed interest in the training on Surgical techniques, USG, radiography, Animal nutrition and feeding management, Infertility related problems in large animals, ETT, and recent advancement in disease diagnosis.
The participants have also suggested the several researchable issues such as Control of external parasites and diseases associated with them vis-a- vis climate change, Resistance to ectoparasites, rumen microbiome of high altitude cattle, subclinical markers for early and specific disease diagnosis, Metabolic disorders, Impact of herbicides and pesticides on reproduction efficiencies of ruminants, and herb based therapeutics Chief Guest, Dr. Triveni Dutt extended his warm welcome to Dr. Sandeep Rattan, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, H.P and all his officials for participating in the programme. He has highlighted the contribution made by ICAR-IVRI, a 134 years old Heritage Institute in the containment and eradication of several animal diseases.
Commemorating the significant contribution of IVRI, a special Dak Cover and Dak Ticket was issued by GoI. He highlighted that the Institute is playing instrumental role in the national animal disease control programme and has also been given responsibility for quality control of veterinary biologicals. The Institute is having rich and diversified IP portfolio with transfer of 46 high end technologies to various commercial houses. 32 patents, 74 designs and 44 copyright were already granted to the institute whereas 175 are under various stages. Recently, Institute has developed combined PPR & Goat pox vaccine, thermo tolerant PPR and FMD vaccines, Marker FMD vaccines. Institute has also developed cross-bred genetic resource such as Virndavani cattle and Landly pig and registered Rohilakhandi goat. He added that the Institute is actively engaged in outbreak investigation pan India along with technical handholding of RDDLs of states through CADRAD. Besides, the Institute is also giving expert opinion to Zoos, Safaris and National Parks on wildlife.
He also apprised about various educational initiatives taken by the Deemed University IVRI in the form of vocational courses, certificate courses, and online diploma courses which can be utilized for capacity building and knowledge refreshment of the filed veterinary officers. Dr. Dutt also advocated the adoption of 64 ICT tools developed by ICAR-IVRI on the various aspects of animal husbandry. He informed these ICT tools are already being used by more than 4 lakh people in 134 countries. He further informed that more than 75 package of practices (PoPs) have been developed and compiled on the basis on requests from previous interface meets. He opined that this workshop & Interface meet will not only help in the developing close liaison with state animal husbandry department but will also help in finding the key researchable issues.
The Guest of honour, Dr. Sandeep has appreciated the effort taken by IVRI in refreshing the knowledge of veterinary official through deliberation one in the workshop. He further opined that his department is seriously considering the strengthening of disease diagnosis lab for which suitable initiatives are under continuation. He further, stressed to work together with IVRI on One health concept has for several diseases there is major shift in host range.
The technical session-I includes the detailed deliberations on Effective utilization of unconventional feed resources for producing quality fodder in hilly region, management of infertility and repeated breeding, Issues of antimicrobial resistance and role of ethno medicine in addressing AMR, and research undertaken by ICAR-IVRI, RS, Palampur. The session –I was followed by panel discussion (Technical Session II) where the query on various aspects such as use of onion and garlic use in anemia, amaltas use in constipation, silage making in polybags which were suitable replied by experts. Further, on the vaccine development of foot rot, the Dr.K.P.Singh, JD (CADRAD) informed that vaccine has been prepared and soon after filed trial it will be made available. Further, the request received for research work on bovine enzootic hematuria for which IVRI will soon be taking initiatives. A total of 313 participants have registered for the event. The meeting was attended by Dr. K.P.Singh, JD (CADRAD), Dr. S.K. Mendiratta, JD (Academic) , Dr. S. K. Singh, JD (Research), Joint Directors and station In-charges from Mukteswar, Bengaluru, Palampur, Kolkata, Pune, HDs, scientists, students and veterinary official, KVK officials from Himachal
Pradesh.
